On Wednesday, Sept. 14, Atlantic City Police Officer Latray Butcher was working a fixed traffic post at the intersection of Texas and Atlantic Avenues when he observed Wesley Briscoe walking eastbound on Atlantic Avenue.

Butcher recognized Briscoe as a man that was wanted for a July shooting and broadcasted Briscoe’s direction to responding units via police radio. With assistance from Surveillance Center personnel, Briscoe was tracked to the first block of south Missouri Avenue where he was stopped by Lieutenant Kevin Fair, Sergeant Mohammad Kaiser, and Officer Marquez Jones. Briscoe was subsequently taken into custody without incident.

The criminal charges stem from a shooting that occurred on July 9. At 1:02 a.m., patrol officers responded to the boardwalk at Montpelier Avenue for a report of a male shot. Officers arrived and located a victim with gunshot wounds. The victim, 21, of Atlantic City, was transported to the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Division, for treatment of his injuries.

Briscoe, of Atlantic City, was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and weapons offenses, police said.

Briscoe was being held in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
